Each of the decorative motifs painted on the cassettes of the wooden ceiling is different. However, similarities can be observed. In fact, three types of structural variations were applied by the painter joiners: the most simple is the centrally-focused, diagonally-structured motif. The other two are rather similar to each other: one of them is based on the wandering plants waving along the sides, the other one features axisymmetrically-structured leaves or flowers bending into two directions from a stem. In addition, there is a cassette which does not suit any of the above-mentioned variations.

Correct answer.
But why does the ceiling feature a pumpkin? Is it a pumpkin at all? Or a melon?
It is probable that among the roses and the tulips the pumpkin does not have a decorative role. Although it appears in the story of Jonah, it is not considered to be a real biblical plant like grapes, for instance. Pumpkin has become a symbol of impermanence or mortality in Christian symbolism, as it grows rapidly and dries suddenly. Is it possible that the picture of the pumpkin reminded the believers of this? Or rather of the melon, which became more widespread and more important in this region in the 18th century? In 1724, it was noted by Mátyás Bél that the most important regions in Hungary for cultivating melon was Szabolcs and Szatmár counties. It can not only be seen in Sonkád, but also in other churches. Find the melon on the painted cassettes.
